It’s the season for tricks, treats and scares. And what better way to celebrate than bringing our favorite treat (wine, of course) together with our favorite Halloween movies? The trick is knowing which wine to pair with which film. Don’t fear, that’s what we’re here for. Here are 8 eerily perfect M Cellars wine and Halloween movie pairings.
Halloween: 2019 Meritage Reserve
As Brackett says in the movie, “It’s Halloween. Everyone is entitled to one good pair.” At least, that’s how we remember it. But which wine to choose? When we think “slasher,” we think red. So for the kings of slashers, and the first of an 11-film Halloween franchise, a top-quality red blend is a perfect accompaniment. Enter our 2019 Meritage Reserve. Bold and full of body, it makes a bloody good partner for one or more movies in this series. If Michael had a glass once in a while, maybe he’d have been a little more laid back.
Hocus Pocus: 2019 Pinot Noir Amphora
The Sanderson sisters, resurrected on Halloween night after 300 years in the grave, are plotting to steal the souls of children so they can remain young, beautiful, and alive forever. What better pairing than a wine that uses an ancient technique, brought back to life in modern-day? Our 2019 Pinot Noir Amphora is fruit-forward, unique, and sure to put a spell on you.
The Shining: 2020 Cabernet Franc
We don’t make redrum, and we don’t think we’d want to. But we do make a bold, full-bodied red wine that gets better with age, and we think it’s the ideal pairing for this iconic classic. Our 2020 Cabernet Franc was amphora aged, and it really shines (in the way a great wine should). Note: this wine is only available to Wine Club members. It’s easy and free to join today.
Paranormal Activity: 2020 Cuvée
Generally, ghost stories pair well with whites. Technically, we’re dealing with a demon here (per one of our favorite quotes: “ghosts are the spirits of humans, and this thing isn’t human”). Still, we’re sticking with white, because, that way, jumping out of your seat at the slightest movement of a bedroom door won’t leave a red stain on your carpet. And because this is the first of a franchise with at least two killer installments, we recommend our 2020 Cuvée, a fan-favorite blend of Pinot Gris and Gewürztraminer. When your blood runs cold, at least your taste buds will be happy.
Scream: 2018 Noiret
You might think a movie with a killer called Ghostface would call for white, but the bloodlust craved by whatever psychopath is behind the mask (no spoilers here) convinced us that a deep, ruby red was the answer. Just make sure you bring the bottle with you, so you can avoid saying, “I’ll be right back…”
Casper: 2020 Gewürztraminer
A haunted manor, an afterlife therapist, a hidden treasure — what more could a ghost story ask for? A grape-filled friend. Young, bright and cheerful, our 2020 Gewurtztraminer is the perfect companion for the friendliest ghost you know. With its aromatic flavor, creamy texture, and long finish, not even Stretch, Fasto, and Stinky could scare you away.
The Blair Witch Project: 2020 Rkatsiteli
A low-budget that went blockbuster, this spooky, found-footage film became one of the most successful independent horror movies of all time. For that, we paired it with a wine that offers a big bang for the buck. Our 2020 Rkatsiteli, at only $20, also happens to be one of our M Cellars fan favorites and one of our most requested varietals. It’s unique, like the found footage style of the film, and made from an ancient grape (much older than the legend of the witch itself).
Ghostbusters: 2019 Sparkling Madelyn
While we technically only see Slimer downing red wine in the Alhambra Ballroom, we have to admit that overall, Ghostbusters is a party. And when it comes to parties, we think bubbles. Besides, if you WERE going to pair a wine with marshmallows, the off-dry sweetness of our Sparkling Madelyne would wonderfully complement the physical manifestation of the apocalyptic Sumerian deity Gozer.
